[open] space training 101 -- shuttles and general health and safety, oh my!
CHARACTERS: Carolyn Fry, Ellen Ripley, and ANYONE WISHING TO ATTEND SPACE TRAINING SESSION 101
LOCATION: The shuttle hangar bay.
WARNINGS: This is space. Be forwarned. Liable to see language used throughout this log.
SUMMARY: Fry and Ripley kick off the first official session of space training with a review of shuttle safety, evacuation measures, and basic safety tips and regulations for diet, exercise, and mental health while living in space long term.
NOTES: Threadjack like fiends, and tag in action brackets or prose, whatever works best!
The shuttle bay only made sense as a first location for any type of space education because it was large, it was clearly filled with machinery that might have fit in a hangar on Earth, but didn't quite have the same feel as the Earth based hangars, and it was a stark reminder to those on board that their means of leaving (when they had any means at all) was in a smaller version of what they all lived in now: a space ship. Shuttle class instead of Colony Class, but space ships everywhere they looked.
Having five functional ones running since right before the prior disastrous shore leave meant having the technical resources to run people thorugh basics of boarding, securing themselves and others, securing the shuttle itself, and getting back out again should the automatic locks fail. There were a slew of things to go over, and drills to set up and run as long as the people attending stuck with what they'd come there for.
All that after a run-down on basics in staying healthy in space. May they never need to apply the ones regarding existing in space in zero-g, but may they start being informed on precautions to take now.
With Ellen coming in from the lifts with the last of the stragglers, and Carolyn already waiting, Space Training 101 (there had to be a better name, but simple may indeed be best) was about to begin.

AFTERWARD
ota!
Pike would be proud (i think you've had enough attention for one day, cadet kirk) he was sure.
either way, he's impressed by the presentation. it isn't that he wasn't expecting something less, if he's honest he isn't sure what to expect, but the organization with the receptiveness of those present- it seemed like a success.
he'll smile at anyone who notices him, and welcomes the conversation- gladly ready to answer questions- but he keeps an eye out for an opening with Carolyn or Ellen.]

Now you'll get to be in the recording and everything.
[ Bad joke, but her defining point has never been her sense of humor. ]

[he tells her with confidence, hands finding his hips and a smile lighting his mouth when she draws close enough to talk to without shouting.]

Or anyone else who knew what was what when it came to space travel. It was good, really good, people were willing to learn and following through on proactively learning.
She nods to Kirk when she approaches. ]
Penny for your thoughts.
[ ... wasn't that one straight out of the archives. ]

That went well. [he says honestly, gesturing.]

"Hello! I didn't expect you here."

Surprise.

He brushed his arms down quietly, thinking about how soon he can slip out without looking too antisocial. ]
no subject
Slipping out isn't an option just yet though, since Carolyn's approaching. ] All right? [ It's easier to stress some people out than others. ]
no subject
I think so. You got a list of protocols I can follow to double check?

[ Ellen offers a smile, part of her amused because leaving early sounded like what she'd prefer to do. Not that it was much of an option. Better to stick with making herself available, no matter how ludicrous it felt. ]
Thanks for coming. Think you got much out of all of this?

I learned that if the brainwashing sociopaths, the food and the monsters don't kill you, something else will.

Fry sighs, runs a hand through the back of her hair, and heads over. ] Enjoy yourself?

He tilts his head slightly as she approaches, something like a smile in the shape of his mouth.]
Me? I'm just killing time.
[He didn't need any space training. Could probably give Carolyn a lesson or two on survival out here, really. But she's being Captain Fry, and he wants to see how that goes. If it stands up longer than one moment in the mud and the rain, two people to save.]

she doesn't notice at first, but her face does brighten when she spots the bald man with the goggles. It's been a while--a long while--and Chase likes a sense of familiarity. Riddick, even if he doesn't think so, is familiar to the girl.
So she moves next to him, offering a bit of a knowing smile. ]
You're well-versed in space travel, sir. But it's nice to see you here nonetheless.
no subject
But he'd also seen enough not to get too attached to any of them. As well as that was working out, the few of them already intent on following him around. Especially this one, Chase. The youngest he'd dealt with, but she didn't act it, and that set him on edge. He sees her approaching him, but he does nothing to acknowledge her, even once she's stood beside him and speaking. He keeps looking out over the shuttle bay, but eventually does say,]
Not here for a lesson.

This guy is half a glimpse as she moves out, enough to give her pause and half a second of observation. Ripley wasn't fond of what lurked in shadows. What walked the light could be as dangerous, but it had the false sense of security in knowing what was coming at you.
Her hesitation turns into a full stop. Eventually, she inclines her head toward this guy.
No need to approach. Acknowledgement was enough. Nice to see you, whoever you are. ]
no subject
And maybe she's smart enough to know not to deal with him, too. Keeping her distance, but still acknowledging his presence. He gives an answering tilt of his head, after a moment or two, and that's all.]

you wanted everyone to tag you right sure you did

And now he's just gonna slowly amble his way out the door. Go ahead and catch him, though, considering he's been here the whole time and has not said a DAMN THING.
That's creepy, dude.
Really creepy.]

Pick up anything?
[ She knows some of it is basic, not necessarily considered useful by everyone -- but if they'd covered everything they wanted to, it would have taken the entire day. Better to do it in segments. ]

However, since they are stuck there is no need not to hear out what is to be said.
There are many enough people that she is able to stay behind, close enough to hear but far back enough once it is through. ]

Throughout the session she's had a bottle of water with her, and she has it now as she approaches, nodding in greeting. ] Learn anything interesting? [ Once her question's asked, the top of the bottle is pulled off for her to take a sip. ]
