thirty-first jump;

CHARACTERS: Any and all.
LOCATION: Gravity Couches and beyond.
WARNINGS: Maybe some swearing, or even some violence, and more than likely some implied (and possibly explicit) nakedness.
SUMMARY: Another month, another jump, another round of new faces.
NOTES: There is something very easy about waking from the gravcouches this month. The sensation of being watched is absent, and so is much of the sickness - even for those characters who entered Engineering in February. Instead the jump feels comfortable, the stasis fluid warm on your skin, the medbay lights not too harsh as you emerge amongst your fellow passengers. The sensation may be unnerving in its strangeness, but there will be a deep feeling of being well-rested, calm and content, that will not be completely lost no matter how much you question it.

----------------

You wake up in darkness.

There's a breathing tube jammed down your trachea, and you're suspended in a tube of clear blue fluid. Upon registering your level of consciousness, the gravity couch drains the fluid surrounding you and retracts the breathing apparatus; the doors in front of you open, and you're deposited on the floor of a stark, sterile medical bay.

You are not alone.

There are others who have come before you, others who are awakening beside you. Some may be familiar to you, perhaps even friends. Others have much less amiable plans. Some are merely alien and inexplicable, but there are always those who might mean you harm.

After you catch your breath and your vision returns, you notice a number on the inside of your forearm. Maybe it's a familiar number. Maybe it means something. Maybe it's just a number. But the number—completely unique to you—is a tattoo, and it does not come off.

If you enter the room adjacent to the medbay, you will find a small locker with your number on it, surrounded by rows upon rows of identical lockers. Inside, you will find a few of your personal items, a communications device, and a ship's uniform in your exact size. The comms device is fully powered and connects directly to the ship's network; it's your only means of communication beyond physical conversation. Upon turning the device on, a neutral, automated voice will say, "Please take the blue lift to the passenger quarters." Any other attempts at communicating with the rest of the network are met only with static.

This is your welcome party.

[ a head-shake at the apology, like 'don't worry about it', but she doesn't have time to vocalize that before Kate's asking a question. Yes, she's definitely new. ] Glad it's not obvious. [ but it's in good humor. ] I'm Sally.

I'm sure I'd remember you if you'd been around, that's all, [ Kate says, and then laughs, lifting a hand to swipe over her forehead and into her hair, shaking her head. ] That was kind of pick-up line-y, wasn't it? Sorry. The jump really slows your brain down. Anyway, nice to meet you, Sally. If you need a hand with anything, let me know?

Hey, a pseudo pick-up line is definitely not the worst greeting I've gotten so far. [ and to the offer: ] Yeah, I'll definitely... let you know. [ it comes out distracted because she got caught on something else Kate said. ] The jump - that's what you called it, that's that tubey goo-bath thing?

Are you telling me I'm going to have to do that again?

Not exactly. [ Kate doesn't seem to mind explaining, gesturing back towards the pods. ] The goo bath thing is apparently called a gravity couch and the blue crap is stasis fluid. Basically, it keeps us alive while the ship jumps through a wormhole. It does that once a month, so yeah, every month we all have to come down here and get mostly naked and blue.

Fantastic. [ it's clearly not fantastic. ] That's just... great. [ a hand lifts to rub at her temple a little as she suppresses the urge to plaintively whine.

after a few seconds though:
]

In the meantime, I guess I should be asking where from here?

[ Kate's smile is crooked and sympathetic. ] Yeah, it's a lot, [ she says, like this isn't barely scraping the surface of the Tranquility's weirdness, ] a lot of weird.

In the meantime, if you take the elevator down there to the floor number on your arm you'll find a room at the other number. They're decent little dorm-style things, I guess. Each floor has kitchens and pantries, and there are some bars around, too. I guess those're probably the first places most people seem to go? But there are gardens and gyms and libraries, too, if that's more your style.
