thirty-first jump;

CHARACTERS: Any and all.
LOCATION: Gravity Couches and beyond.
WARNINGS: Maybe some swearing, or even some violence, and more than likely some implied (and possibly explicit) nakedness.
SUMMARY: Another month, another jump, another round of new faces.
NOTES: There is something very easy about waking from the gravcouches this month. The sensation of being watched is absent, and so is much of the sickness - even for those characters who entered Engineering in February. Instead the jump feels comfortable, the stasis fluid warm on your skin, the medbay lights not too harsh as you emerge amongst your fellow passengers. The sensation may be unnerving in its strangeness, but there will be a deep feeling of being well-rested, calm and content, that will not be completely lost no matter how much you question it.

----------------

You wake up in darkness.

There's a breathing tube jammed down your trachea, and you're suspended in a tube of clear blue fluid. Upon registering your level of consciousness, the gravity couch drains the fluid surrounding you and retracts the breathing apparatus; the doors in front of you open, and you're deposited on the floor of a stark, sterile medical bay.

You are not alone.

There are others who have come before you, others who are awakening beside you. Some may be familiar to you, perhaps even friends. Others have much less amiable plans. Some are merely alien and inexplicable, but there are always those who might mean you harm.

After you catch your breath and your vision returns, you notice a number on the inside of your forearm. Maybe it's a familiar number. Maybe it means something. Maybe it's just a number. But the number—completely unique to you—is a tattoo, and it does not come off.

If you enter the room adjacent to the medbay, you will find a small locker with your number on it, surrounded by rows upon rows of identical lockers. Inside, you will find a few of your personal items, a communications device, and a ship's uniform in your exact size. The comms device is fully powered and connects directly to the ship's network; it's your only means of communication beyond physical conversation. Upon turning the device on, a neutral, automated voice will say, "Please take the blue lift to the passenger quarters." Any other attempts at communicating with the rest of the network are met only with static.

This is your welcome party.

That's 'cause you never had it. There's a reason people pile up at every restaurant for a bite, y'know.
wroughtsteel: (They will follow you into battle.)

[personal profile] wroughtsteel 2014-05-11 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Pile up at every what. ]

What is a restaurant?

[well this isn't going to be easy]

A place where people go to eat. They have to pay for it, though. Y'know - a restaurant. [pause. squint.] Where 're you from?
wroughtsteel: (Standing straight and proud.)

[personal profile] wroughtsteel 2014-05-11 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Like a tavern of sorts, then.

[ She's not entirely unfamiliar with the concept, at least. She just doesn't recognize the word. ]

I am from the kingdom of Rohan, in Middle Earth.

[personal profile] nightblogs 2014-05-11 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
... Yeah, like a tavern. [he points at her approvingly. There we go.]

That's in Europe, right?

[never heard of 'Rohan', but he imagines some place with 'middle' in it should be from that area. And she sounds like she's European, anyway.]
wroughtsteel: (You should not doubt him.)

[personal profile] wroughtsteel 2014-05-13 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Feeling ever so accomplished. She always is when she manages to understand something from other worlds. ]

No, it is in the world of Arda. I have never heard of Europe before.

[personal profile] nightblogs 2014-05-13 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Then you lost me, lady. Don't think my Earth's got any Ardas around.

[or people who haven't heard of Europe.]

So, you travel a lot?
wroughtsteel: (In battle and honour.)

[personal profile] wroughtsteel 2014-05-13 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
That is alright, my Lord. Many here have never heard of the world where I come from.

[ She remembers having heard of France before, but she has no idea that is in Europe. ]

Not ever before in my life. I did leave Rohan recently, and had not yet returned home by the time I awoke here.

[If he had a drink, he'd be spitting it. Lord?]

I'm Hyperion. Call me Hyperion.

[but oh yeah sure let's listen to your life story]

Oh. So you were traveling for the first time, huh? That's tough. That you had to end up here, I mean.
wroughtsteel: (Her long hair like a river of gold.)

[personal profile] wroughtsteel 2014-05-13 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Very well, Hyperion. I am Éowyn.

[ Do not mock the medieval lady and her manners. She is only being polite. ]

Thank you, although the place where I was before is far from a safe one. But I do miss the people who matter most to me.

Yeah - I know how that feels, Éo--[er,]--wyn. Am I saying that right?
wroughtsteel: (Her eyes were shining.)

[personal profile] wroughtsteel 2014-05-13 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, perfectly so. [ She smiles. He's not the first person confused by her name, and if he had said it wrong it would not have been the first time either. ]

I think everyone here misses someone. It may be why some of us find comfort in meeting other people, even from strange places.

[personal profile] nightblogs 2014-05-13 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Right! I've been making some friends around here and everything. Helps me from missing home so much, y'know. It helps.

[pause.]

Still miss McDonald's, though.
wroughtsteel: (You are a woman.)

[personal profile] wroughtsteel 2014-05-13 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Alright then, he gets a very small chuckle from her this time. ]

Is it not possible to make a-- [ What was it called again. ] -- a burger yourself here?
nightblogs: (057)

[personal profile] nightblogs 2014-05-13 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[oh no, he hates this question.]

Yeah, I guess, but I hate cooking.
wroughtsteel: (Not with a blunt blade.)

[personal profile] wroughtsteel 2014-05-14 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
[ Well that does make it a little more difficult. ]

That is unfortunate. I would offer to help, but I can only make stew.
nightblogs: (072)

[personal profile] nightblogs 2014-05-14 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
[ping.]

I like stew.
wroughtsteel: (Courage for our friends.)

[personal profile] wroughtsteel 2014-05-15 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
[ You poor man. ]

Well... if you wish, I can make you some. But it will not taste like burger, I think.
nightblogs: please dnt (054)

[personal profile] nightblogs 2014-05-15 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? What do you want in exchange, though?
wroughtsteel: (Her eyes were shining.)

[personal profile] wroughtsteel 2014-05-15 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Do not concern yourself with that. I ask for nothing in return.

[personal profile] nightblogs 2014-05-15 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[say what

no one is that nice!!]

Y'sure? I could... wash your dishes or your clothes or whatever.
wroughtsteel: (For she is a fair maiden.)

[personal profile] wroughtsteel 2014-05-16 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no, I would never.

[ She's not asking him to wash her clothes, how highly inappropriate. ]

Thinking of it, if you can teach me how to use those devices to wash clothes, I would be most thankful.
nightblogs: (056)

[personal profile] nightblogs 2014-05-16 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh! Yeah, I can totally do that. Sounds like a deal.
wroughtsteel: (Ride with me.)

[personal profile] wroughtsteel 2014-05-17 11:06 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you, then. That will already be most helpful.

[ She offers him a polite bow and returns to fastening her sword to her waist. ]
