thirty-first jump;

CHARACTERS: Any and all.
LOCATION: Gravity Couches and beyond.
WARNINGS: Maybe some swearing, or even some violence, and more than likely some implied (and possibly explicit) nakedness.
SUMMARY: Another month, another jump, another round of new faces.
NOTES: There is something very easy about waking from the gravcouches this month. The sensation of being watched is absent, and so is much of the sickness - even for those characters who entered Engineering in February. Instead the jump feels comfortable, the stasis fluid warm on your skin, the medbay lights not too harsh as you emerge amongst your fellow passengers. The sensation may be unnerving in its strangeness, but there will be a deep feeling of being well-rested, calm and content, that will not be completely lost no matter how much you question it.

----------------

You wake up in darkness.

There's a breathing tube jammed down your trachea, and you're suspended in a tube of clear blue fluid. Upon registering your level of consciousness, the gravity couch drains the fluid surrounding you and retracts the breathing apparatus; the doors in front of you open, and you're deposited on the floor of a stark, sterile medical bay.

You are not alone.

There are others who have come before you, others who are awakening beside you. Some may be familiar to you, perhaps even friends. Others have much less amiable plans. Some are merely alien and inexplicable, but there are always those who might mean you harm.

After you catch your breath and your vision returns, you notice a number on the inside of your forearm. Maybe it's a familiar number. Maybe it means something. Maybe it's just a number. But the number—completely unique to you—is a tattoo, and it does not come off.

If you enter the room adjacent to the medbay, you will find a small locker with your number on it, surrounded by rows upon rows of identical lockers. Inside, you will find a few of your personal items, a communications device, and a ship's uniform in your exact size. The comms device is fully powered and connects directly to the ship's network; it's your only means of communication beyond physical conversation. Upon turning the device on, a neutral, automated voice will say, "Please take the blue lift to the passenger quarters." Any other attempts at communicating with the rest of the network are met only with static.

This is your welcome party.

"Oh," Remus says, perplexed both by Harry's physical shift and by his advice. But all right. He's out of his depth in every way and disinclined to be impolite even when he isn't. He'll call them something else, or nothing at all. 'Not wizards' is easy enough.

After a moment he asks, "How long have you been here?"

"A little over a year now. It's been interesting." There's a euphemism and a half. "But it's not too bad. At least, I don't think so."

Harry knows that not everyone shares his upbeat outlook on life in space, but really, it's not that bad. There's regular food and drink, they can do what they like, and there's a bit of adventure thrown in.

Remus hums, equal parts unconvinced and unwilling to argue—though when he's feeling a little less kidnapped and a lot less shaken, eating better than he has in months, and realizing how relatively little he has to hide, he might be more inclined to agree.

But over a year and Harry's still alive. That's a good sign.

"Do you know what they want with us?" he asks, turning to look down another corridor as they pass. That doesn't feel like the most important question. Remus feels like the most important questions are what Harry's been up to and whether his relatives were decent and how he knows for sure it was Peter—and really what he'd like to do is just gawk at him for a bit—but he knows they aren't, yet.

"Sirius and Severus didn't say much," he adds. "I mean, they said a lot, but it was a—" Clusterfuck. "—mess."

"No idea, not really. We're going somewhere and this ship was built to carry people through space, but beyond that it's all theory and no fact." Kindly, Harry will not go into some of those theories. Sooner or later Remus will likely start to divine some of them for himself.

"That's usually how it goes with them. So long as one hasn't killed or permanently maimed the other, I'd count it as a victory." A victory for what, we don't know, but it's a good sign. A nice thing. A lack of horrible injury and death is always a plus, right? "I'm sure once he's settled a bit, Sirius will be able to give you a better rundown of what's happening."

That's none of it terribly comforting, Harry, but points for being less alarming than you could have been.

"Of course," Remus says first, because the instinct to shove any problems with his friends out of sight runs as deep as anything else about him, but he relents. Half the passengers probably saw, anyway. "Or, maybe. I—" Tried to kill him. "—went after him. I didn't know he might be innocent. Severus had to step in."

Which doesn't mean Sirius won't give him a rundown if he asks for one. He's already offered to explain. But Remus doesn't want to talk to him. Maybe not ever, and definitely not before his face has healed.

"I'm glad you're all right, all of this aside," he goes on quickly, and if it's an abrupt change up subject, it's at least one that's sincere. There isn't anything he could have done for Harry, even if he hadn't listened when Professor Dumbledore told him—everyone—to stay clear, but he has worried.

Harry isn't entirely sure that he's all right, but for now, he'll accept Remus' assurance and smile brightly.

"I wouldn't worry about Sirius too much. Honest. He'll bounce back." After all, Sirius forgave Harry and that was for a far greater crime than a bit of misplaced aggression. "And I'm well enough, but I've sort of grown fond of this place. I mean, I liked being an Auror and all that, but there's more to do here."

He is far too young to be an auror.

As disinclined as Remus is to assume the best about the Ministry of Magic, given everything, he's less inclined to insult the possibly legitimately prodigious abilities of someone he barely knows. His raised eyebrows balance on the line between incredulous and impressed.

"I suppose it's a good thing when being an Auror is boring," he says, and then—still doing that balancing act—"How old are you?"

"Oh, it's not boring! It's never boring. It's just, well, that's all there is, isn't there?" It's a fine career and one he's more than happy to do, but it really was the only option available to him. What else could he do?

"And I've been here a year. I'm nineteen."

There goes the lid he was keeping on his incredulity. He says, "Congratulations," but he says it slowly, with questioning uptalk and a heavy undertone of are they mad?

"Yes, yes, I know. It wasn't my idea either, but it's not like there were a lot of other, better options." Harry's expression shutters for a moment and his posture shifts, but he gets himself back under control relatively quickly. It's not what Remus has said so much as it reminds him of what someone else had said about the same topic.

"It's not what I've been doing here. I didn't go into security."
