SUMMARY: New team meet and great
- [ Maria had gotten their details from Shepard. Their names at least - any other information Maria would rather have substantiated by them themselves. Only their names mattered, and what was real. She wanted to talk to them, to know who she'd be working with, and to know as much as she could about what they could do.
She'd sent a message to them requesting to meet, giving them a location and a time. It could have been negotiated - the time at least but she had to meet them at some point, either now or on the comms.
After arriving, a little early just to check the place out - apparently the bar was one of the first places a few people had thought to mention to her, Maria had ordered herself a drink, picked an empty booth and waited for the other two to arrive. If only she knew who to look for ]

The woman in the booth did, though. Honestly, non-civilians were easy to pick out from a crowd. They held themselves a certain way with a quiet air of confidence--Well, some of them. Army grunts were easy to pick out, but for entirely different reasons. Loud and pompous, they wanted to be noticed and threatening. Anyone a little more specialized generally had that same threatening demeanor without having to call attention to it.
John stood by the booth for a moment before offering: ]
Maria Hill, I'm assuming. John Grimm...
[ He carried nothing more deadly than a handshake. Although, these days that was pretty deadly. ]

[ Maria stood from the booth, offering her hand to him. There were things that were familiar about him - his stance, gaze. Training that would help him in the situation that was no doubt about to come up - the next month's mission ]
I thought that it would be better to know something before the mission.
[ Learn this 'team'. Hopefully be effective by knowing strengths and weaknesses, or whatever the minimum necessary would be to make sure that no one got hurt. Maria indicated to the opposite side of the booth before sitting herself back down. Now it was just Jason left, if he was coming. They'd have to see ]

Yeah. Makes it a little easier to catch a bullet for you...
[ So maybe that isn't the best opener, but John's a little rusty with this kind of meet and greet. He's been surrounded by military testosterone for most of his adult life. It generally stunted your social etiquette. ]
So [ He slips into the booth opposite her. ] where in the hell do we start?

[ Maria had her own questions, possibly more than she would ask but it gave her somewhere to start. How much she got... she hoped it was something. He was here, that meant he was at least receptive to the idea of it ]
You and Todd need to work together on the ground. I need to know enough to know how to best use the both of you. You've had some training, that gives me one less thing to do before the next jump. [ Though she might pull him, and Jason, down to whatever classed as a firing range - or the gym. Gauge their skills visually to be certain ] How long?
Let me know if I should change this up.
As he approached the two of them, he suddenly felt a little more conscious of the knife he had brought with him; he had no intention of using it unless he absolutely had to, but he also guessed if either of them caught a hint of it, it could make things tense. With his hands in the front pocket of his jacket, he shifted his arm a bit, trying to make sure the knife on the inside pocket remained as unnoticeable as possible.
As he approached the booth, he caught the last bit and decided to interrupt with his answer. ]
About five or six years worth. [ Nevermind that he looked like he was in his early twenties and actually was only eighteen. Child soldier, much? ]

He scooted over in the hopes it seemed more like an invitation than avoidance of the kid. And he was just a kid. Which was saying something because John wasn't much of an adult himself and this guy was much younger. ]
Eight years. Some in the Army, the rest as a Privatized Marine.

For Todd- he was either older than his appearance would give him, or he'd started young. She'd worked with others that had too - Natasha being the best example. Different circumstances would start everyone differently, but as long as he could do the job, and most importantly wanted to? That's all that mattered ]
Fourteen years. [ Most of that being with SHIELD ] Started marine. [ And turning her attention briefly to Todd: ] Maria Hill, John Grimm. [ She'd only introduced herself in the initial comm ]
Now. What can't you do? What are your weaker areas?
[ She wanted somewhere to start, something to build up with them. What they could do was great to know, but she didn't want to be in a situation (worst case scenario) and they couldn't do something. Especially if neither of them would be good with it. Basic knowledge or skill improvement would be somewhere to work on to stop that ]

But that wasn't something he wanted to admit for several reasons, so he dug a little deeper and came up with something more constructive. ]
I've only lead a few recon missions without my CO, so I can't say I have a lot of experience when it comes to leading a team completely on my own.
[ Or doing so hot during those leadership positions. That too. So far, he would have to say he was 0 for 2 with the last round of missions. He may not have been in charge at Olduvai initially, but as second-in-command and with the way Sarge was spiraling out of control, he should have done more than turned it into a solo act. ]

[ And if that all failed mid-mission she'd be in his ear pulling him back there, or ordering all of them along. She was ignoring that thought, though. Things would go well, and he'd pull it out fine. If she couldn't help him then he shouldn't be leading the team, but what was their other choice? ]
I'd like to see your skills in action too. Before the mission.
