In the momentary lull before the band begins to play
CHARACTERS: Jack Harkness, Ianto Jones, and Luthien
LOCATION: Space Bar & elsewhere
WARNINGS: flirting, couple fighting, & Jack Harkness
SUMMARY: Ianto has planned a special dinner for him and Jack. Too bad Jack unthinkingly blows him off to hit up the space bar with a very beautiful someone else. And is promptly found out.
NOTES: Two threads! One for Jack & Luthien at the space bar, the other for Jack & Ianto after he is in Trouble.
So maybe Jack should have checked with Ianto before he invited Luthien to a drink or two with him at the bar. Maybe he should have connected the dots when Ianto had asked him when he would be off of his Security duties. What was it they said about hindsight being 20-20? They should include another whole separate clause about what happens when Jack Harkness gets thrown into the mix, as far as relationships go. He should have known that things had been going too well for him lately.

Strangling the words that want to rip from his throat, he looks viciously at Jack's beaming face before turning and stalking back out into the hallway. He'll be damned if he makes a public scene like some jilted teenager. Jack bloody Harkness can enjoy his sodding date.

"Ianto? Hold on a minute. Ianto, wait!" He manages to catch up with him just outside the space bar, reaching to grab his arm and keep him from running away any further. He's only just a little out of breath and looking very confused, and he really honestly doesn't understand that look Ianto gave him, or is still giving him for that matter. "Ianto?"
no subject
"I waited for you an hour before I went looking. A whole sodding hour while dinner went cold and I started to think you must have been killed on your way back. I looked everywhere, and I didn't even bloody well think to call you or text you because surely, surely if you were in any position to use your communicator, you'd have done it first, yeah? You'd have called me and told me there was an emergency, or you were running late, except there wasn't any emergency, was there? No, instead I find you in the pub, on a date with some elvish tart! And you've been here the whole time, haven't you? Laughing it up while I wait around and worry!"
He's in Jack's face now, eyes welling up, unable to separate pain from anger. "You want to know what the worst thing is, though? The worst thing is, you didn't even think enough of me to text me a comforting lie."

"I..." If there's one thing to have Jack stumbling over his words, it's an angry lover. And not just any angry lover, but his angry lover, angry at him. "I'm sorry. I didn't think that... I mean, we were only having a drink." He shakes his head, spreading his hands in front of him in a defensive and placating gesture. "I didn't think that you...would care." Which sounds pretty horrible, in retrospect. Oh well.

He's so upset, he's shaking. On some level he understands that Jack hadn't purposely meant to hurt him, but it doesn't improve matters. Deliberate harm would be terrible, but for Ianto, passive harm is far worse. The ability to disregard him so easily, to forget about him with less than a thought, makes him feel invisible again.

"...damn it, Ianto. I'm sorry. You could have told me, though. How was I supposed to know?" Once again, probably not the best thing to say right now...
no subject
He deflates, backing away a step, the hurt overwhelming the anger. "Did you think I was just being overbearing? Am I that easy to disregard as soon as a pretty face looks your way?"
That's unfair and Ianto knows it, but it comes out anyway. It's a natural instinct to accuse, to hurt in turn.

Steak and pie. Handmade bread. Jack's mouth is watering at the mere mention of it. Just because they've been to the bar and he's had a few drinks doesn't mean that he's had anything to eat yet. And it makes him feel even more guilty about it. The meal that Ianto had prepared special as a surprise. For him. For them. The look in Ianto's eyes, though... "What do you want me to say, Ianto? I'm sorry, okay? I didn't know."
no subject
"Have your damn drink. I'm not hungry anymore." He turns away harshly, stalking back down the hallway the way he came. He can barely keep his thoughts straight and he's too emotional to have a productive conversation. All he wants is to get away from Jack and be alone for a while.

He didn't miss that glance in the direction of the bar. "It isn't like that with her. It isn't like that with me! Damn it, Ianto..." He doesn't know what to say. He isn't sure there's anything to say. He feels horrible. "I'm sorry. I just had a couple of drinks. And yes, I missed your dinner, but it wasn't on purpose and I apologize. Okay?"
no subject
"Just leave me alone, Jack." There's less vitriol in his words now, because he's choking back tears. He refuses to cry in front of Jack, but he's not going to last much longer and he needs to get away. "Just... leave me alone for a while. Please."
He emphasizes with his hands, pushing back as if against an invisible barrier, backing away as he does. When there's distance between them again, and Jack doesn't make any signs he's going to push his advantage, Ianto flees back down the hallway as fast as he can without running.

He takes a deep breath in, letting it out slowly. He's going to have to apologize to Luthien too. A little voice in his head bitterly comments that at least she will be understanding, but he quickly stomps that down. That's not fair to Ianto. The other man is beyond upset, and there's more to this than Jack really understands, he's at least aware of that much. First thing's first, heading in and making his apologies and excuses to Ianto. No more drinks or merrymaking for him tonight, though. After that, it's time to try and figure out how to fix this. Somehow.
