SUMMARY: jax and anderson call up a meeting to discuss what to do about van rijn, ward and resnik, everyone is invited cookies and punch will be provided.
[ this is possibly the fullest gunnery’s ever been, but jax is saving that observation for later, hoping maybe to get a laugh out of anderson. the two of them are standing up by the bridge, jax leaning against the main battle station, deceptively casual, cigarette tucked behind his ear. anderson provides a contrast to jax’s apparent casualness, her back ramrod straight, standing at an almost perfect parade rest.
it’s a serious meeting. they need to figure something out here, some clear way to proceed that everyone can agree on. jax has his doubts about universal agreement, but he and anderson are here to make an attempt at finding it. ]
This is a good turnout. Make yourselves comfortable as you can, and me and Anderson’ll bend your ears for a few minutes before we all start talking.
[ or before everyone starts shouting over each other. jax has seen discussions of this magnitude take place on the network, which kept its own order, but doing it like this, they might need to come up with a better way of keeping people cool. he glances at anderson, eyebrows raised, but continues. ]
We asked you all to come down because we’re looking to coordinate. We got a real decision to make about this bullshit with Van Rijn’s people. We’ve got Ward and Resnik making noise about it, and I don’t trust either of them, but we need to figure out what we’re doing if Lina starts jawing at us again. [ jax’s tone stays level, but his expression tightens at the mention of lina. the idea of her doesn’t sit right, hasn’t from the start. jax doesn’t like it, but that’s something to talk about later. ] We figured meeting here was best, because neither of us trust the network, no matter what kind of fancy locks you slap on your conversation. We know they can hear us if they want, and no matter what we choose, I figure the element of surprise is the best way to go.
[ he pauses, takes the cigarette out from behind his ear as he tips his head to anderson. ]
Anderson here’s gonna lay out our options. Or our options as far as we figure them.
[ anderson takes a step forward. ] The most likely explanation is that they are after the ship. Whether or not they would be true to their word of rescue is unknown. This leaves us with three options.
[ ticking them off on her fingers, she lists, ] First, we engage with them but lie to them, feed them no useful information while we try to gain information from them.
Second, complete radio silence. No one engages with them.
Third, we tell them what we know and hope for rescue.
[ all of these options are neutrally presented, neither tone nor stance betraying any preference. jax’s gaze lingers on anderson for a moment, as if checking to see if she’s got anything else, before he speaks again. ]
And before we get into the discussion part of the evening, y’all should know we’re still operating at around forty percent with the turrets and cannons. We’ve been working on repairs, but if anyone with some technological know-how wants to donate a couple shifts, we’d be obliged. [ not that it’s so simple, but any extra set of hands would be better than none, even if he and anderson had to do a crash course in turret repair. ] If we’re taking Ward and Resnik’s advice, we better prepare for the day Lina and her people stop talking and start trying something more hands on.
[ and on that optimistic note: ]
So anyone else got any bright ideas they want to add, or should we put this to vote?
( ooc: jax and anderson, also an ooc post for explanations + handwaving and ooc coordination!! )

the entire point of this was to talk, to plot, to try and coordinate. coordination works best when people listen to one another and get the impression that they're being heard, too. ]
Gunnery handles external defense, so yes. [ is said in answer to his question, before she adds, ] And we've been boarded before.
no subject
Resnik'scryptic bullshit, and so the gesture is appreciated.]So there are safeguards in place to keep anything hostile contained, then?
no subject
no subject
I meant contained to the area where they board so we can cut them down if necessary... But that's good to know too.
[They don't typically take all that many prisoners where he's from, but it's good to know the option's there, even if it does sound like this Ward asshole is a problem.]
Is security also responsible for meeting the threats as they present themselves?
[Look, he knows what his skills are, and if there's a place where he can make himself useful and keep the people aboard safe that's where he wants to be.]
no subject
they are the ones controlling the armory, after all, and in case of emergency, people need to be armed. ]
no subject
[Well, at least they're thorough here. That's something.]
I'm better suited to handling things once they're within reach, probably... But I'm willing to learn how to perform maintenance as well.
[If he can strip his gear down and clean it, and put it back in perfect working order, he can manage a turret... And if they can shoot these people down before they make it aboard, well, that's the ideal outcome, isn't it?]
no subject
[ so if he wants to join SEC and still help out in gunnery, that would be a distinct possibility.
and the turrets certainly need repair and maintenance. ]
no subject
They mark you again if you choose one over the others officially?
[If that's the case, he won't be thrilled about it... But just so he's clear on the procedure.]
no subject
no subject
[Definitely shady- he really doesn't want something like this coming back to bite him in the ass.]
...OPR?
no subject
of course, anderson comes from a world where neither of these things is particularly uncommon or frowned upon, where civil rights aren't exactly the norm, so it bothers her less than it bothers others. ] Communications, Gunnery, Engineering, Flight and Support all fall under that.
[ she doesn't bother adding that she's a member of gunnery. the fact that it was her network post, that she just gave the speech together with jax, those things should speak for themselves on that matter. ]
no subject
But there's nothing he can do about it except move on, and so with a nod that's exactly what he does:]
Cooperative, then. [As cooperative as separate branches get, he guesses. He's familiar with that, too.] ...Speaking of. Was anyone able to get a straight answer about what exactly we're up against with these people? I only spoke with one of those two... Resnik. [And he sounds just thrilled about it. He crosses his arms.] She wasn't very helpful.
no subject
Some people work double shifts, one at gunnery and one at security. ( that is confirmation of his assessment that they're cooperative — at least to a degree.
as for his last question: ) We don't know. None of us are from this universe and not everything we've learned about it has come from reliable sources.
Ward and Resnik have their own agenda, too, I'm sure.
no subject
WHAT ABOUT A SPACE GUTTER.....That's cooperative enough for him- more so than they'd been back home, anyway. The (other) downside to being part of the black sheep military division- aside from being almost universally disliked and seen as a drain on taxes and resources is that, unsurprisingly, getting assistance from the Garrison and the MP was like pulling teeth unless there were titans literally at their gates. Good times.]
Whatever their agenda is, if the ship's taken that'll affect them too. It's in their best interest to cooperate, even if there is other shit going on behind the scenes.
[And there probably is. Shady fucks...
He doesn't suppose he really needs to point that out, though- he's just bitching.]
no subject
( is there a gutter in space though??? anyway she understands the idea of venting, even if her own attitude has always been very much to focus only on that which she can change and not bother with the things she can't, and not let them bother her either.
there's only so many resources, and she has only so much time. no point in dwelling on pointless things, is there? )
no subject
We'll need to work around it and get what we can directly from these people- an exchange, like your first option. [Because that's clearly the best choice of the three.] What should I be telling them in return?
[He knows... Probably less than they do about the Tranquility, and you really don't want him making shit up ton his own. It won't be pretty... Or particularly believable.]
So our story's convincing.
no subject
Charles said it was the 45th, so go with that if asked.
no subject
[He supposes it'd be pretty suspicious if everyone here knew too much. That'd sound rehearsed, probably.]
Is this Charles the person I should be referring them to, if it comes to that?
no subject
no subject
Noted. Thanks.
[Honestly at this point there isn't really much he can do, not until he has a better understanding of the ship... And so if shunting these people off to someone else is how he can be of the most assistance, he's glad to know how to do that most efficiently.]
...It's Anderson, right?
no subject
it should go without saying, perhaps, but it doesn't. ] Yes, it is. [ and a moment later, she sticks out a hand for him to shake. ] Good to meet you.
no subject
Levi offers his own name in return, along with a firm handshake when Anderson initiates it.
Let it never be said that he's incapable of playing nice okay]You too.
[Considering she's one of the two who'd called this meeting, Levi will use this time to fuck off to some corner of the room so she can see to whatever she needs to and he can watch and listen to the discussion, unless he's stopped.
That'd gone substantially better than his conversation with Resnik- he won't forget the fact that Anderson took the time to get him up to speed... Or at least make a dent in the amount of shit he still doesn't know about this place. He only trusts the archives so much, given the way that sort of thing works in his world, and so hearing it face to face is ideal.
THANKS ANDERSON!!]
no subject
anyway she'll continue making the rounds, addressing concerns both voiced and unvoiced, as you do. ]
