SUMMARY: jax and anderson call up a meeting to discuss what to do about van rijn, ward and resnik, everyone is invited cookies and punch will be provided.
[ this is possibly the fullest gunnery’s ever been, but jax is saving that observation for later, hoping maybe to get a laugh out of anderson. the two of them are standing up by the bridge, jax leaning against the main battle station, deceptively casual, cigarette tucked behind his ear. anderson provides a contrast to jax’s apparent casualness, her back ramrod straight, standing at an almost perfect parade rest.
it’s a serious meeting. they need to figure something out here, some clear way to proceed that everyone can agree on. jax has his doubts about universal agreement, but he and anderson are here to make an attempt at finding it. ]
This is a good turnout. Make yourselves comfortable as you can, and me and Anderson’ll bend your ears for a few minutes before we all start talking.
[ or before everyone starts shouting over each other. jax has seen discussions of this magnitude take place on the network, which kept its own order, but doing it like this, they might need to come up with a better way of keeping people cool. he glances at anderson, eyebrows raised, but continues. ]
We asked you all to come down because we’re looking to coordinate. We got a real decision to make about this bullshit with Van Rijn’s people. We’ve got Ward and Resnik making noise about it, and I don’t trust either of them, but we need to figure out what we’re doing if Lina starts jawing at us again. [ jax’s tone stays level, but his expression tightens at the mention of lina. the idea of her doesn’t sit right, hasn’t from the start. jax doesn’t like it, but that’s something to talk about later. ] We figured meeting here was best, because neither of us trust the network, no matter what kind of fancy locks you slap on your conversation. We know they can hear us if they want, and no matter what we choose, I figure the element of surprise is the best way to go.
[ he pauses, takes the cigarette out from behind his ear as he tips his head to anderson. ]
Anderson here’s gonna lay out our options. Or our options as far as we figure them.
[ anderson takes a step forward. ] The most likely explanation is that they are after the ship. Whether or not they would be true to their word of rescue is unknown. This leaves us with three options.
[ ticking them off on her fingers, she lists, ] First, we engage with them but lie to them, feed them no useful information while we try to gain information from them.
Second, complete radio silence. No one engages with them.
Third, we tell them what we know and hope for rescue.
[ all of these options are neutrally presented, neither tone nor stance betraying any preference. jax’s gaze lingers on anderson for a moment, as if checking to see if she’s got anything else, before he speaks again. ]
And before we get into the discussion part of the evening, y’all should know we’re still operating at around forty percent with the turrets and cannons. We’ve been working on repairs, but if anyone with some technological know-how wants to donate a couple shifts, we’d be obliged. [ not that it’s so simple, but any extra set of hands would be better than none, even if he and anderson had to do a crash course in turret repair. ] If we’re taking Ward and Resnik’s advice, we better prepare for the day Lina and her people stop talking and start trying something more hands on.
[ and on that optimistic note: ]
So anyone else got any bright ideas they want to add, or should we put this to vote?
( ooc: jax and anderson, also an ooc post for explanations + handwaving and ooc coordination!! )

...He can live with that.
He'll be at the specified place at the specified time, leaning sullenly against the wall with arms crossed and ready to discuss the next step.]
We probably can't trust what they say outright, but anything they can tell us is better than nothing. The more we know about them, the better off we'll be... But like you said, they'll expect information in return, and so whatever we offer them will need to be coordinated- we have to assume they're having a similar discussion right now, or will in the future once they've heard from us.
[He frowns- there's something else he's concerned with.]
Also. I'm assuming these turrets and canons you mentioned are for defending our exterior; if it's the ship they're after, how likely is it that we'll be boarded?
[He doesn't know much about the tech, or even if that's possible, but it seems like an important question- depending on the answer, he may have a few suggestions.]

Better option might be to assume that's the route they're gonna take. Sounds to me like it's not far off from what some of the people here are thinkin' of doin'.

at any rate, she's lurking, not exactly willing to stick her hand up for any bright suggestions just yet. there's just too much that has happened already that she doesn't know about, and - frankly, she doesn't want to make an ass of herself in public. so she hangs out towards the back, and when jax and anderson finish the rousing speech and conversation starts to break out amongst the people amassed in the room octavia finds a friendly enough (read: not likely to kill her) face to slide up next to with a wry smile and a question to ask: ]

Think we should do a little bit of both your first and last option. Trade information, but nothing that would jeopardize our safety. We can't trust them, obviously, but they seem to know more and are willing to share knowledge. Knowledge we could use.
[She pauses.] All things considered, we have capable people here with experience and abilities they seem to have been previously unaware of. Think we should engage if they attempt to make contact once again, but also prepare for the worst, in case it ever becomes us against them.

You forgot option number four. Pretend to totally buy their bullshit little story, and get them to come to us. [The suggestion starts all slow and plain, like she's talking to very stupid children, but it sharpens quick enough.] Your guns are in sad shape? Too bad. That's why we're going to get them on our ship, where we can get to them.
Because your stupid ideas? Are all a lot of sitting around, which is what we've been doing. I'm done with sitting around. You think we can trick the answers out of them by playing dumb? They already know we're dumb. We proved it. So they'll just keep leading us around, playing us out, until they get the chance to get the drop on us--and our captain, and his little friend. they'll be nowhere we can find, and we'll be even more screwed than we are right now. Well, fuck that. Let's get them first.

Gunnery doesn't just have cannons and turrets. [ He gives a nod in the general direction of the armory. ] You've got people on this ship who know how to defend themselves but don't have the firepower to do it — and people who don't know, who can learn.
I can't repair a cannon, but I teach.
[ He can rig the shuttle bays full of explosives, too, but he'll just. keep that thought between himself and the telepaths in the room. ]
And I'm not the only one. We don't know how much time we'll have; we should use it.

[ Tranquility? Is the only place they know that can - theoretically - get them home. For those who want to go home. So, unless - until - he knows all there is to know about the consequences, he can't strike out. But... ]
[ When he speaks up, his voice is steady, certain. Confident in what he can do. ]
For those who don't know me, my name's Rich Rider. Nova Prime, in the universe I come from. That means I have - most, by the look of things, here - a cosmic force that I can use.
Up to a small fleet, I can defend the ship from an attack - assuming I'm not stuck in a coma again when it comes, that is.
[ It would be up to a medium fleet with no problem, back home, but his powers are somewhat... changed, here. But this much, he thinks he can promise. ]

The third option is a bad idea for obvious reasons.
Furthermore, you should all be aware that the Scylla pirates were able to locate us because of outgoing signals. Engaging with van Rijn's people at all could be a disaster -- if nothing else, it could cost us time we don't have by making us easier to find. I understand that some of you would like to give what we've been getting, but they'll be expecting that. Electing the first option may be tantamount to selecting the third.
Don't court attack. The odds are not on our side.
[He's fairly sure that he doesn't currently have any way of jamming outgoing signals, especially not with the kind of communications array van Rijn's people seem to be using, one that bypasses the ship's network entirely... but wouldn't it be too bad if attempted outgoing messages didn't make it off the ship.]
OTA
Neither side has given us any reason to trust them. So the thing we need most right now is information.
OPEN
Ward and Resnik are trying to use us again. Like they did with the Scylla.
[She's still furious about it, that they'd been so reactive, killed so many and only captured a handful. Rounded them up neatly so Ward could sneak in and murder the rest. She still doesn't know why, whether it was to stop them getting more information out of them, stopping the chance of them escaping, or a mercy killing. It doesn't matter. It had happened, and she hasn't forgotten about it.]
All of our information on Van Rijn came from them, pirates and criminals, or Joe Davis.
[Not the best collection of sources. A pretty damn poor one, riddled with reasons for lies and bias, and the parts of her that had been trained and drilled into the neat sharp lines of analysis hates the idea of taking action based on it.]
The only objective data we have is that he's prime minister and his government commissioned this ship. We need more.
no subject
This ship is clearly desirable--it's also your home, and while it may be the only bargaining chip you have, it also doesn't belong to you. Bargain poorly, let them see your hand, and you may lose more than you're prepared to.

Tempting as it is to strike up conversation, I suspect that even feeding them lies will be giving them more information than we think. Whether because they're trying to create profiles of those they talk to or because keeping an open line will give them more time to take control over accessing our network, perhaps other systems on board.
We can play stupid with them, but they're better at it, frankly. If we do want to go that route, then I advocate picking a select few people with talents for this sort of thing, while being monitored by Communications. Perhaps we can steal back information if we put our resources to it, rather than leaving it to a free for all.
[ This is said in the tone of someone who expects that a vote won't account for anyone who wants to try anyway, but, putting it out there. ]
What I do know about them is they approached us first with deceit. It moves me to think they're not here to help us, but use us.

Until we figure out ways to block their signals and our own, disengaging isn't actually an option. They'll keep hacking in and following us and not replying when they call or having a couple designated representatives be the only ones talking isn't going to do anything but tell them we're better organized than they thought and I don't see how that's a good thing.
[ She pushes off from where she's leaning against the wall, but arms stay crossed against her chest until one lifts now to gesture, hand spread, palm empty. The other stays hooked in the strap that crosses her chest, attached to the alien-looking bow that bumps at her back as she moves. ]
What information are we really so concerned about giving them, anyway? Best case scenario for us is they decide we're not really a threat. So our numbers, lack of access, disrepair, confusion, all this shit doesn't actually hurt us. The only truth that hurts us is them knowing some people here have powers they might not be expecting. [ And at this point they may've even muddied the waters there already, so let's pretend the trolling was totally a deliberate part of this plan and not kneejerk assholery. ]
I say we do whatever we need to do to string them along until we can either hack into their system in return or lure them on board. If we have a chance to actually change the status quo around here, let's take it.
no subject
[ It's only a mild rebuttal, in defense of his own proposed strategising -- not everything she is saying is something he disagrees with, after all. ]
We don't know the answer to your question, and that's the danger. What we have to say, truth or not, might have little value to them. What might be valuable to them is keeping an open line, and the advice from experts in Comms is radio silence.
We should at least embargo some topics. Our abilities being one. Jump numbers and other such data being another.

William + Takeshi??? + whoever fancies it okay
The whole scenario still makes her fidgety, though.]
It's a huge mistake to assume that we can manipulate these people. Huge. All we know about them is they can find us, and they lie to us. We know a hell of a lot more about the people here, like we've definitely got idiots who are gonna have a hard time sticking to the script. Are we really gonna bet all our lives on everyone here behaving themselves for once?
no subject
For one thing: that they're onto us, whether or not we say anything. They've gotten onto a subnetwork. They've bloody hacked us already. [William's thumb-typing slows as he opts to focus his attention on conversation rather than taking notes. This profoundly important stuff does not place its importance in note-taking.] Two-- radio silence can't very well be fucking enforced, with the rates of defiance run rampant among us, and Lina's already demonstrated she's got zero fucking compulsion about looking in on us through private lines. [A beat. The briefest, half-brained eyeshift toward Takeshi.] Zero-- frigging, comp--
[Fuck it. William has some gifts but self-censorship is not one of them. He looks at Heather with a vague apology incipient in his facial expression, but it kind of gets swept away with all the very much they have to talk about. And he sincerely wants her opinion.] I ain't saying we should go off and give them fucking everything. I'm just saying, they barely need us; we ought to think about maybe we can get fucking something out of it in the meantime.
